One of the most common mysteries that Admissions Counselors are looking to solve each spring has to do with decision timelines on the part of their admitted students.
As I’ve outlined in previous articles like this one back in January, just because students don’t tell you when they plan (or hope) to make their decision doesn’t mean you can’t find out what they’re thinking.
Another way to get this valuable information involves asking a question with a “because” in it. It’s a powerful word… powerful “because” it gives the student an added reason to give you an answer.
For example, you could ask, “I’m wondering what you have left to do before you make your decision because our next Orientation date in June is almost full.”
Or, “I’m wondering what you have left to do before you make your decision because we just added another admitted student day in April, and coming to it would give you a better feel for the kind of community you’d be joining.”
In our work with admissions offices around the country we find that “because” is a powerful motivator for this generation of students.
I encourage you to incorporate it in your upcoming conversations.
