Last week, one of my favorite clients asked:
“What does it truly take to be a successful college coach?”
My reply:
If I had to answer in one word, I would say…
“Leverage.”
You need a system that consistently develops your athletes, attracts top recruits, and builds a culture that wins… for many years.
Because having talent alone won’t get you there.
Resources are often limited, and the demands on your time and energy are high.
So you need persistence, a thick skin, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks.
And you must LEVERAGE your resources.
Leverage your assistants and staff to handle tasks so you can focus on what matters most.
Leverage your athletic department for support and access to tools that make your job easier.
Leverage your current athletes to be your best recruiters by sharing their positive experiences with potential recruits.
Leverage other successful coaches to learn what’s working (and what’s not) in your field.
There ARE people who want to help you succeed!
And you can still learn indirectly from those who don’t.
That said…
If you want to be a successful coach, we can simplify it to this:
On the athlete development side — you must LEVERAGE your best systems to maximize your players’ potential and performance.
On the recruiting side — you must LEVERAGE your current success and relationships to consistently attract top-level talent.
Obviously, there’s a lot of work, skill, and strategy that goes into the execution…
But at the most foundational level, it really comes down to those two things.
Whatever you do…
Always remember this principle:
“Where is the success in this action?”
If there isn’t any, stop it.
If there is, leverage it.
