If you want to become an elite recruiter, one of the most important—and most overlooked—skills you need is time management.
You only get so many hours in a day to do the work that moves your program forward.
How you use those hours decides whether you build a championship team or fall behind.
You don’t need more hustle. You need a better plan.
That’s where Recruitment Time Blocking (RTB) comes in.
Top recruiters organize their days into time blocks that are 100% focused on recruiting. This helps them shut out distractions and get more done.
Here’s how to make RTB work for you:
1. Schedule Recruitment Time Blocks Daily
Set aside specific times each day for recruiting—just like you would for practice or meetings. For example:
- 1 hour in the morning for emails to proactively get to your recruits info about your program.
- 2 hours in the afternoon for calls or virtual visits
- 1 hour in the evening to watch film or attend games
During these blocks: no non-recruiting emails, no meetings, no admin work. Just recruiting.
2. Eliminate Distractions
RTB hours are sacred. Protect them.
- Turn off email alerts.
- Silence or remove your phone.
- Log out of social unless you’re using it for recruiting.
3. Prioritize What Moves the Needle
Spend your RTB time on high-impact actions:
- Start with your top recruits
- Ask: What small commitment can I get this week?
- Ask: What questions will move things forward?
- Go to games, watch film
- Build relationships with coaches and scouts
- Send personal, thoughtful messages
- Run campus visits or virtual tours
Skip the busywork during RTB. That can wait.
4. Batch Admin Tasks Outside RTB Hours
You still need to handle things like compliance, scheduling, and team logistics—but don’t let them eat into recruiting time. Block separate windows early or late in the day to knock those out.
The Power of Focus
Try just one focused hour a day this week. You’ll feel more clear, more in control, and more productive.
You don’t need to work more. You just need to work smarter.
You’re not slacking if you stop grinding 24/7—you’re stepping into a higher level of coaching.
Mastering RTB will help you stay more consistent with your recruiting efforts. More consistency allows you to move faster than coaches still trying to out-hustle the day.
Protect your RTB like your career depends on it—because it does.
